CHANGE DEFERRED, by Olaniyi Adekanye

Poemify Telegram Channel

The opposition exploited the citizens’ cry for “change” to gain political power, but regrettably, the socioeconomic conditions worsened significantly. This poem captures the situation in three verses.

What happens to a change deferred?
Does it dry up on the lips of service mis-chiefs
Or lost in Aso shame-ber
Like the Chibok prime-mates in Sambisa?

Does it sink in the technocrats’ pits of mind
Or melt away in the scorching stare of opposition?
Does it ride on a democratic local-motive?
Or derailed from the topographic blunt rails of yore?

Maybe like what happens to the sacked without severance
Or the killed without viaticum…
We dread this mis-ery
